Santa Bárbara Castle

Bárbara Castle in Alicante is an imposing medieval fortress that has stood watch over the city for nearly 900 years. It was first built in 1087 by Count Antchette, who wanted to defend his land from pirates and enemy soldiers. Santa Bárbara Castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history as wars and natural disasters have taken their toll on the structure. Today it is one of the most visited monuments in Alicante and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.


Central Market

 Central Market in Alicante is one of the most popular markets in Spain with a variety of fresh produce, meats and other groceries. The market is open daily from 7:00 AM until 9:00 PM.

The Central Market was built between 1857 and 1860 by architect Canyelles in the neo-classical style. The market is shaped like an L with two wings that extend from a central rotunda. The wings are made up of shops on either side and have offices for managers on the second floor. The ground level has a variety of fruits vegetables and meat stalls and fish vendors occupy most of the space. Currently, there are about 120 permanent stalls in this market.


Wander around in the Barrio de la Santa Cruz

Barrio de la Santa Cruz is an excellent example of Spanish colonial style with its white buildings and Moorish influence.

I recommend that you go for a walk through the narrow streets and admire all of the beautiful buildings. If you are interested in history, then I suggest visiting the Santa Cruz church’s museum where they have kept old documents from different periods of time. You can also visit the Museo de la Ciencia y del Arte (Museum of Science and Art) to see some paintings by famous artists such as Picasso, Miró and Dalí. There is also an opportunity for you to get lost in the maze of houses, which is located in Barrio de la Santa Cruz. The houses are white and have coloured doors, and window frames. There are several vases with flowers and plants. The neighbourhood is a must-see, however, remember that there are people that live in those houses so respect their privacy!


Santa Maria del Mar church

Santa Maria del Mar church in Alicante is a must-see during your visit. It is one of the most beautiful Gothic-style churches in Spain. You can also enjoy a panoramic view from the top of this church by climbing its tower.

Santa Maria del Mar Church was built between 1450 and 1492, making it one of the oldest buildings in Alicante. This church has a rectangular shape with large windows that illuminate the interior. The façade is decorated with beautiful sculptures like birds, flowers and cherubs which are typical Gothic style elements.


Go for a swim at one of the beaches in Alicante

Playa de San Juan Beach
