How to save money to travel

How to save money to travel

Travel is not expensive as most people think and everybody can save money in order to travel. Is just a question of priority!

In this post you will find tips to how to save money fast to travel the world.

Analyse your finances

This is a vital step! Analysing your finances will make you be able to save money. Once you check what you spend money on and how much money you spend on a daily or monthly basis, then you can create a plan, you will know what a necessary expense is and what can be considered as a luxury.

Categorise your expenses

Make a list of the expenses you have every moth or every week and will not change anytime soon; i.e rent, groceries, subscriptions, utility bills such as gas, water. By categorising your expenses, you will know exactly how much you need to take a month for those expenses, and you can calculate how much you will end up with, that might give you an idea if you will be able to save or not.

Make a travel plan

Decide which country you want to go, look for flights and accommodation so you can have an idea of how much you need to save. Think how much you want to spend daily; it doesn’t need to be an exact value it can be an estimate that will allow to know roughly how much you need to save up.

Ditch your debt

Pay off all your debt, if possible, that way you won’t pay charges and instead you can put the money aside in your travel fund. Of course, sometimes it’s not possible to get out of debt straight away specifically if you still need a big amount to pay for example college debt, however, try to pay off at least the ones you can so the charges aren’t so big.

Reduce your expenses

I am sure that you don’t need to have a subscription to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney +, HBO etc.

Are you actually going to the gym, or do you just keep paying for a monthly membership and saying that soon you will start going?

Once you do step 1- the analysis of your finances you will realise that there are a lot of things you can cut off and put that money towards your travel fund.

YOU DON’T NEED TO STOP LIVING THE LIFE YOU LIKE JUST TO SAVE MONEY TO TRAVEL, YOU JUST NEED TO FIND WAYS TO SAVE UP MORE.

Stop eating out

This is where I spend most of my money! I love ordering in or going out to have a meal. Yes, it is alright to eat in a restaurant or order on UberEATS because you came late from work. But do you need to do it all the time? the answer is NO;

If you start cooking and eating at home you can save up a lot of money. If instead of paying for a meal of 15$ you cook and eat at home, you can save up to 10$, this over a week gives you a total of 70$ provided you only order one time a day.

70$ it’s enough to pay for a meal or a night in a cheap hotel, train tickets etc.

Sell your things

You probably have clothes or shoes that you only wore for a day and now it is just taking space on your wardrobe. You can sell those things and put the cash towards your goals. There are several apps where you can sell your things, I have been using eBay and Vinted for years, but you check other websites too.

Get a second job

You can get a part time to earn a bit more. Also, you can do a side hustle to get passive income. For instance, you can start a blog, sell things on Etsy, start a YouTube channel and so on.

Be committed to your goal

You need to decide what you want, if you try you will save up for sure. You need to make it a priority! Nonetheless, if every week you continue to buy something that you don’t actually need in your life, if you don’t stop eating out or keep paying for unused membership you probably won’t achieve, or it will take much longer to achieve your goal and create a big fund for your travel adventures.

Do free things

You don’t need to stop doing the things you enjoy and restrict yourself that much. Instead try to do free activities or try to go to cheaper places. Often bars have a happy hour, you can get 2 drinks for the price of one. You can also check if there are free activities and attractions in your city.
