Lagos- brief history
Lagos, Algarve’s largest city, is a modern seaside metropolis with plenty of attractions. In fact, this lively port town has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique Moorish and Portuguese influences.
The name “Lagos” comes from an old Celtic word meaning “lake.” This refers to the large body of water that is located near the city where navigation was possible during storms and high tides. Lagos has been through many changes over time. From being a small fishing village, it eventually grew into a large city that was important in Portuguese trade and politics. Throughout history, Lagos has been under many different rule systems including Portugal, Spain, French Republics and even the Ottoman Empire.
Nowadays, it is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful seaside views and old town center that has preserved its Portuguese culture over time. Situated on the western side of the Algarve region and at the head of a long inlet, Lagos has been a settlement since pre-historic times. Today it is a vibrant modern town with a population of about 20,000 people.
