29 Jan Discover the Magic of Český Krumlov: Czech Hidden Gem
If you’re looking for a charming, historic European destination, you’ll want to add Český Krumlov to your list! This picturesque town in the Czech Republic is full of beautiful architecture, fascinating historical landmarks, quaint cafes, lovely river views and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Whether you’re looking to explore the city’s rich history or simply relax in its picturesque setting, Český Krumlov is sure to have something for everyone.
The city has a population of just over 5,000 people, this medieval settlement is sure to leave you in awe. Dating back to 1230, it was originally built on the banks of the Vltava River by Prince Přemysl Otakar II of Bohemia.
Things to do in Česky Krumlov
1. Visit Česky Krumlov Castle
Visit the Castle Český Krumlov is known for its picturesque castles and one of the best ways to experience them is by visiting the historic sites that dot the city’s landscape. The first stop on any traveler’s itinerary should be at the Český Krumlov Castle, also known as the Old Town Hall Tower. This famous landmark was built in the late seventeenth century and features a bright yellow facade with four large windows. The castle is located in the center of the city and can be accessed by climbing an ancient stone staircase or taking an elevator to the second floor. It is also possible to visit all four floors by taking an elevator or stairs, which makes it easy for families with children or those who may not be able to climb too many steps.
2. Check the Cloak Bridge
Cloak Bridge in Český Krumlov is a historic bridge that spans the Vltava River in the Czech Republic. The bridge is named for its distinctive cloak-like shape, and is one of the most iconic landmarks in Český Krumlov. This bridge is a three-storied covered arched bridge that stands on massive stone pillars. It connects to the castle. The bridge was finished in 1777 and it has remained the same ever since. The bridge is a must-see, the views from both the top and bottom of the bridge are stunning.
3. Stroll around Latrán
Latrán is a beautiful, historic district in Český Krumlov and is the area directly below the castle, on the left of the bank of the Vltava. The district is known for its well-preserved architecture and its many churches, monasteries and medieval houses.
4. Walk around the historic center
The historic center sits below the castle high above in a valley formed by the Vltava River. It’s a beautiful place to walk through and enjoy the architecture, as well as shop for local goods at one of the many artisan shops. If you’re looking for a meal, stop by one of the cafes for a nice cup of tea or coffee while you explore the town!
Once you’ve had your fill of exploring in Český Krumlov, head up to the castle for an amazing view over the city. You can also visit the Museum of Czech Music, which features an extensive collection of musical instruments and compositions from all over the country.
5. Check out the Rozhledna Sloup (Lookout Tower)
When it comes time for relaxation, you’ll want to head down to Rozhledna Sloup (Lookout Tower). Here you can enjoy some spectacular views of the city below while sitting on a bench or climbing up through an old tower window!
6. Visit the Krumlov Museum
After taking in the view, continue your walk along the river until you reach the Český Krumlov Museum. This museum features exhibitions that showcase Czech history from the 12th to 18th centuries. Český Krumlov is also home to many Baroque palaces, so be sure to check them out while you’re in town!
7. Enjoy some Česky Krumlov rafting on the Vltava River
Yes, you can go rafting in Cesky Krumlov! The rentals are based out of Havana Hostel. If rafting isn’t your thing, you can also paddle along the Vltava River or you can hire a canoe/Kayak and explore the river. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to do this, but it is on my bucket list for the next time I visit Cesky Krumlov.
8. Visit the Church of St Mary Magdalene
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene With its colourful stained-glass windows and Gothic architecture, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a must-see attraction in Český Krumlov. This historic site was built in 1522 and features an intricate design that will leave you breathless. The church is located near the town square and is open for visitors from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM during the summer months and from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM in winter.
9. Visit the House of the Great Counsellor
The House of the Great Counsellor is another popular attraction in Český Krumlov that’s sure to leave an impression on travellers. This historic building was built during the seventeenth century and features a colourful facade with several windows that overlooks the city’s main square. It’s also worth mentioning that this site has become a popular wedding location due to its beautiful setting and romantic atmosphere.
10. Shop for Handmade Goods
Shop for Handmade Goods at the Market Square If you’re looking for souvenirs or simply need something to eat, then stop by the Market Square where you’ll find plenty of shops and stalls selling everything from jewellery to fresh fruit. The square is located right next to the city’s main attractions and features plenty of places to sit down and grab a bite to eat.
Where to eat in Česky Krumlov
Restaurant U Škraboška (Inscription House)
When it comes time for dinner, head to Restaurant U Škraboška (Inscription House), which is located in a beautiful Baroque palace. They serve traditional Czech food, as well as some Western dishes that are sure to please everyone in your group. The menu includes several dishes such as potato dumplings, pork cutlets, salads and soups.
After dinner, find a spot on one of the many benches along the river and enjoy the peaceful views of this charming town!
Restaurant La Boheme
If you’re looking for a romantic night out with your special someone, then I suggest dining at La Boheme! This restaurant is located in the center of town and features an elegant atmosphere that’s perfect for enjoying a delicious meal. The menu includes many classic Czech dishes as well as pizzas and salads.
Where to stay in Česky Krumlov
You’ll want to spend at least one night in Český Krumlov, as it’s a beautiful place that deserves more than just a day trip. Make sure to book your accommodation early, as there are only a few hotels in the area.

The Hotel Garni Amadeus is situated in the heart of Český Krumlov, just a few steps away from the River Moldau and only 15 minutes walk to the famous castle. Golden Goose Hostel
The Golden Goose Hostel offers dorm beds from €10 per night and private rooms from €20 per night. There is free Wi-Fi and a communal kitchen available. The hostel is located only 300 metres from the town centre and 1 kilometre from the train station.

The Lion’s Den Hostel offers dorm beds from €12 per night and private rooms from €21 per night. There is free Wi-Fi, parking and breakfast included in the price. The hostel is situated within easy walking distance of both the castle and the town centre.
